Los Angeles lies in a basin in Southern California, adjacent to the Pacific Ocean, with mountains as high as 10,000 feet (3,000 m), and deserts. The city, which covers about 469 square miles (1,210 km2), is the seat of Los Angeles County, the most populous county in the United States. The Los Angeles metropolitan area (MSA) is home to 13.1 million people, making it the second-largest metropolitan area in the nation after New York. Greater Los Angeles includes metro Los Angeles as well as the Inland Empire and Ventura County. It is the second most populous U.S. combined statistical area, also after New York, with a 2015 estimate of 18.7 million people.
Home to the Chumash and Tongva, Los Angeles was claimed by Juan Rodr&iacute;guez Cabrillo for Spain in 1542. The city was founded on September 4, 1781, by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve. It became a part of Mexico in 1821 following the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican&ndash;American War, Los Angeles and the rest of California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, and thus became part of the United States. Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality on April 4, 1850, five months before California achieved statehood. The discovery of oil in the 1890s brought rapid growth to the city. The city was further expanded with the completion of the Los Angeles Aqueduct in 1913, which delivers water from Eastern California.
Los Angeles has a diverse economy and hosts businesses in a broad range of professional and cultural fields. It also has the busiest container port in the entire Americas. A global city, it has been ranked 6th in the Global Cities Index and 9th in the Global Economic Power Index. The Los Angeles metropolitan area also has a gross metropolitan product of $1.0 trillion (as of 2017), making it the third-largest city by GDP in the world, after the Tokyo and New York City metropolitan areas. Los Angeles hosted the 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympics and will host the 2028 Summer Olympics.

Native Americans
 Long before the Spanish settlers arrived to settle near the banks of the Los Angeles River, Native Americans were the only inhabitants. It is estimated that the first Native Americans came to the area approximately 10,000 years ago. The Native Americans established villages, known as&nbsp;rancherias, throughout the countryside. One of these settlements was within the boundaries of what was to become Rancho Los Feliz. Archeological surveys have found evidence of a substantial rancheria that existed in the mouth of Fern Dell Canyon in Griffith Park. The traditional name of this village is not known, but the inhabitants were&nbsp;Gabrielinos. This name was given by the Spanish because of the Native Americans' association with the&nbsp;San Gabriel Mission. When&nbsp;Gaspar de Portol&agrave;&nbsp;traveled through the vicinity in 1769, his expedition encountered members of this village.
Land grants
 The 6,647-acre (27&nbsp;km2)&nbsp;Rancho Los Feliz, one of the first land grants in California, was granted to Corporal Jos&eacute; Vicente Feliz. An old&nbsp;adobe&nbsp;house built in the 1830s by his heirs still stands on Crystal Springs Drive in Griffith Park. Other sections of the rancho were developed and became the communities of Los Feliz and Silver Lake.
Griffith's legacy
 Rancho Los Feliz had a succession of owners after the Feliz family. One owner,&nbsp;Griffith J. Griffith, donated over half of the ranch to the city of Los Angeles. This ranch became one of the largest city-owned parks in the country.
In 1882, Colonel Griffith acquired 4,071 acres (16&nbsp;km2) of Rancho Los Feliz. The Lick estate still owned the southwest portion of the rancho and there developed the Lick Tract, which later became a part of Hollywood. Griffith never served in any branch of the U.S. armed forces, but he was given the&nbsp;honorary title of colonel&nbsp;by influential friends in the&nbsp;California National Guard. The title remained a permanent fixture to his name. In 1900, there were only 23 properties in Los Feliz.
Griffith died on July 6, 1919, at the age of 67. Griffith bequeathed $700,000 and his Los Feliz area to the city of Los Angeles to be used for additions to Griffith Park.

Los Feliz

Pasadena is a city in California, northeast of downtown Los Angeles. In the center, Old Pasadena is a shopping and dining district known for its Victorian and art deco buildings. The strikingly modern Norton Simon Museum houses notable European and Asian art, plus a sculpture garden. The Rose Bowl is a sports stadium known for hosting the Rose Bowl Game, an annual college football clash usually held on January 1.

West Los Angeles, also called Sawtelle Japantown, is an eclectic, freeway-adjacent district celebrated for its Japanese eateries and shops. A strollable stretch of Sawtelle Boulevard offers ramen, sushi and shave ice, plus karaoke and Tokyo-inspired gifts. Other options include Chinese dumplings, Korean BBQ and Vietnamese sandwiches. Apartment complexes and slick shopping mall Westside Pavilion round out the area.
